Scam alert
by Ed Beavan
A CLERIC in the diocese of Ely has urged churches to be vigilant, after a con man preyed on elderly members of his congregation, . The Team Vicar of St Mary’s, Orton Waterville, the Revd Richard Hamilton, said that a man visited the homes of three pensioners, claiming to have been sent by the Vicar, asking for money for petrol and to clear debts. Two refused to give, but one handed over £120. “He was preying on the elderly and their good will, and none of them thought of phoning me to check. . . This man travels around and has a system, and has done this before.” The con man is described as white, tall, and slim, with slightly prominent teeth; he has a Scottish accent, and is aged between 18 and 25. |
