Outside the tent

Although it takes place on an open campus, most of the Conference’s official sessions — and some of the unofficial ones — are closed to all but bishops and their spouses.

This includes the early morning eucharist, at 7.15 a.m. each day. I discovered this on Monday, when I tried to enter the service in the Big Top, only to be stopped by five security stewards and a University of Kent security guard, who threatened to call the police if I persisted in trying to attend the service.

I was formerly chaplain to the University of Kent, and organised services on the campus. It seemed odd to be barred from one. When the matter was raised later during the daily press conference, a spokesman said that there was a sensitive balance between being inclusive and allowing the bishops and their spouses to worship without the anxiety of being filmed or interviewed.
