Why I gave up going to Scargill House

From the Revd Beth Gardner
Sir, — Like many others, I suspect, I was saddened to read (News, 11 July) of the closure of Scargill House. As a visitor on and off over many years, I have not changed patterns for a post-modern world: I continue to value a place of retreat.

The reason why I have not been to Scargill of recent years is simple: the programme offered was not what I was looking for, and, even though I live in the north of England, Lee Abbey offered a more relevant and varied programme of speakers.

Engaging in projects, however valid and laudable they are in themselves, does not express the values of a place of retreat, teaching and nurturing faith. I see it as a betrayal of the intentions of those who set up Scargill House and those who supported it over the years.

The Bishop of Bolton’s address was incorrectly given last week. It is Bishop’s Lodge, Walkden Road, Worsley, Manchester M28 2WH. Please would all correspondents include their full postal address in their letter.
