C of E schools win prizes

STAFF from 12 Church of England schools were among the 2008 regional winners announced this week by the National Teaching Awards scheme. Three other C of E schools were recipients of the sustainable- schools awards given by the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

In the London region, Elizabeth Phillips (above), of St Marylebone CE Girls School, was named secondary head of the year, and Karen Chappell of St Thomas’s, north Kensington, was named primary teacher of the year. In the South-East region, Simon Horrocks of Christ Church CE primary, Folkestone, was named outstanding new teacher of the year.

Among the South of England region winners were Philip Sales of St Mary’s VC primary, Bridport (outstanding new teacher); Rob Gallop of St James’s, Emsworth (primary teacher of the year); and John Thompson, St Michael’s, Bracknell, who received an award for innovation. Brill CE school won the sustainable schools award.

Stephen Fraser, of St Michael’s, Carlisle, was named primary head of the year in the North-East and Cumbria region. Dawn Cooper-Noble was named teaching assistant of the year in the North region for her work at Saxton CE primary, Tadcaster; and Meanwood CE primary, Leeds, won the regional award for sustainable schools.

In the East region, Helen Brittain, who teaches history at William Farr CE comprehensive, Lincoln, was named secondary teacher of the year. The West region winners included Rebecca Humphries of St John’s, Warminster, primary teacher of the year; and Beckington CE primary, Frome, won the sustainable schools award.

Olly White, of Kentisbeare CE school, Cullompton, was primary teacher of the year in the South-West region; and the governor-of-the-year award went to Andy Muir of Sir Robert Geffrey CE school, Saltash. Primary teacher of the year in the West Midlands region went to Josie Allaun of St Matthew’s, Stoke on Trent.
