Church ‘buttresses’ prefer changelessness

Sir, — The Revd Maggie Durran is quite correct (as she so often is) when she says that many of our church buildings have an iconic status (Features, 18 September). The old saying is that the church has many buttresses (people who support it from the outside) but few pillars (people who support it from the inside).
