“WE MURDER to dissect” is a handy way of dismissing scientists’ messy explorations. But whenever we bother to attend to their work, we have to admit that, although an unfortunate number of frogs and mice are sacrificed en route, what they discover fills them — and us — with delight and awe at the sheer complexity and beauty of creation.
