King speaks out for Arabs

| KING ABDULLAH of Jordan has said that his country’s top priority is to preserve the Arab identity of Jerusalem and support the people of the holy city.
He said that it was important to boost the steadfastness of Palestinians and help them to overcome their difficult living conditions. The King was speaking during a meeting in the Jordanian capital, Amman, with the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Michel Sabbah. Also present was Bishop Fouad Twal, who will be installed as Latin Patriarch later this month; Patriarch Sabbah is retiring after holding the post for 21 years. In a pastoral letter issued earlier this year Patriarch Sabbah urged Palestinians to adopt “non-violent resistance” that would eventually enable Israel and the Palestinians to enjoy sovereignty and security. He added that Palestinians would have to “pay the price in order to regain our political and economic freedom” and “our religious freedom [for] access to the holy places and Jerusalem”. |
