Greening the home
From Mrs Katharine Weale Sir, — How many times since, say, 1 November 2007 has the Church of England’s environmental officer, David Shreeve (News, 16 May), succeeded in drying his washing in the sunshine? If it is much more than the two dozen times (at the absolute maximum) that I have managed, I should like to know the lie of his land, amount of shade, etc., and how often he has left the stuff out all day, certain that it will not be drenched by a ten-minute downpour while he is still at work. I have never owned a tumble dryer, and, in my last house, got my washing dry by hanging it on a ceiling airer in the same space as my “inefficient” boiler. The boiler in this house is far too efficient for that; so now I drape things in spare rooms in front of radiators that would otherwise be off. Tumble dryers are an easy target, but the problem of getting washing dry is a serious one, and is not being taken seriously enough. Mr Reeve might encourage those designing the houses and appliances of the near future to provide for the many days in the year when there is no sunshine.
