About the sea

HE SAID he was so impressed by the Sea Cadets’ enthusiasm and outlook on life when they came to Bradford Cathedral for their Trafalgar Day service last year that, when he discovered they had no Chaplain, he offered his services.

Jon Howard is the Head Verger in the cathedral, but also a Reader, and is pictured here with the Unit Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Lyn Bullock RNR, and the chairman of the Bradford Unit, Andrew Hargreaves. He is not only delighted to be involved with the Sea Cadets and their activities, but is welcoming the opportunity to exercise his Reader ministry away from the cathedral.

“It’s not easy for me to go to other churches on Sundays,” he told me; so weekday meetings of the Cadets fit into his verger’s life very well. And he enjoys the physical activity. As with all naval chaplains, he wears an officer’s uniform, but bears no rank. Pastorally, he gets to know the boys and girls of the Unit, and is a listening ear.

When it comes to classroom teaching on weeknights, as he has no previous naval experience, he is relegated, he says, to teaching first aid, health and hygiene, and core values. But he has always been keen on sports, including water-skiing, and is looking forward to learning to sail when they all go to Holyhead this summer.
