All quiet in Saltley, says Vicar

by Ed Beavan

THE Vicar of Saltley in Birmingham, the Revd Allan Townsend, speaks of excellent interfaith relations in the parish, despite reports that two evangelists were told to stop preaching there by a police community support officer (PCSO) because it is a “Muslim area."

Arthur Cunningham and Joseph Abraham, based at the Grace Fellowship Church in the parish, say that a Muslim PCSO told them they were committing a “hate crime” by handing out Christian tracts on the Alum Rock Road. They are taking action against West Midlands Police under the Human Rights Act, in a case backed by the Christian Institute.

Mr Townsend said: “Saltley is a very integrated area. A Neighbourhood Watch scheme has just been set up, spearheaded by a Muslim sergeant, and people get on very well. . . By and large we have no problems in this community at all.”

St Saviour’s C of E Primary School is mainly attended by Muslim children.

West Midlands Police have referred the matter to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, and said: “West Midlands Police would like to reassure all communities that there are not any ‘no go’ areas in the West Midlands Police area and we will defend the rights of the individual to freedom of expression and religious faiths.”
