York beat Wakefield

YORK made an extremely impressive start to this year’s Church Times Cricket Cup competition, when they beat Wakefield by nine wickets last week at Whitley Bridge CC. Wakefield batted first and reached 135 for 9, thanks largely to a ninth-wicket partnership of 50 between Pask (54 not out) and Pitcher. All York’s bowlers were economical, and Hughes with 23 for 4 and Hill with a frugal 11 for 2 provided the highlights. In reply, York’s openers, Forrester and Carew, scored 67 not out and 54 not out respectively, as they cruised to victory in just 18 overs.

Manchester beat Liverpool in their first Church Times fixture of the season at Atherton last week. Liverpool won the toss and elected to bat, but were all out for 139 in 35 overs. Heber was top scorer with 44, and was unfortunate to get out when he hit his own wicket, while Manchester’s May took three wickets for 21. In reply, Manchester reached their target of 140 for the loss of six wickets, in 29 overs. Lindop was their stand out batsman, posting 43.

Wakefield 135 for 9 (Pask 54 not out; Hughes 23 for 4, Hill 11 for 2). York 139 for no loss (Forrester 67 not out, Carew 54 not out).

York won by 10 wickets.

Liverpool 139 all out (Heber 44; May 3 for 21). Manchester 140 for 6 (Lindop 43).

Manchester won by 4 wickets.
