Exeter library books

From Mr Peter Thomas
Sir, — After other responses (2 and 16 May) to Professor Jonathan Clark’s article (Comment, 18 April) that claimed that Abebooks.com were offering for sale large numbers of volumes from cathedral libraries, I should like to put on record that a search has been made here at Exeter Cathedral Library which indicates that the claim is no more true for Exeter than for other libraries.

Fewer than 20 volumes with an Exeter Cathedral Library provenance were found on Abebooks.com, of which all but one were modern duplicates. The one exception was removed from stock 70 years ago and would not, under any circumstances, have been allowed to leave the library today. We are not disposing of “a swath” of ancient volumes. We are not disposing of any ancient volumes.
