Goodbye to pews

RIPON is the latest cathedral to do away with its pews and replace them with more comfortable and flexible chairs. The Dean of Ripon, the Very Revd Keith Jukes (right), says that the decision was made after consultation with the congregation, and he is delighted that the 300 chairs are being made by a Yorkshire company, Treske Furniture (the managing director, Justin Bartlett, left), even though they are not quite in the Ripon & Leeds diocese.

The chairs are well-designed “and will comply with the latest health and safety regulations,” says the Cathedral Administrator, Ian Horsford. The old pews, made in the 1930s, are to be made into classic refectory tables to help defray the cost.
