66 per cent like church

by Ed Beavan

A SURVEY commissioned by the Ecclesiastical Insurance Group (EIG) suggests that the British public still cares deeply about churches, despite church attendance figures.

A poll carried out by YouGov, released this week, found that 66 per cent of those surveyed agreed that they would be concerned if their local church fell into disrepair.

Also, 76 per cent of the 2163 adults polled agreed that stealing from churches showed declining moral standards. Forty per cent said that the church plays a key part in their community’s history and heritage.

When asked what they would do if they saw someone vandalising their local church, 86 per cent of those polled said they would call the police.

Chris Pitt, a spokesman for EIG, said: “I think we underestimate this goodwill which people have towards the Church. Regardless of whether someone goes to church or not, or is a Christian, churches are seen as significant buildings.”
