| WHEN THE BBC’s Songs of Praise from Malaga is broadcast later this year, we shall be able to join in the singing, but not in the paella party for 1500 people which took place after it.
The mostly Anglican congregations had come from churches in Costa Del Sol, Almuñécar, and Nerja, and from as far afield as Madrid and Gibraltar, all in the rapidly expanding diocese in Europe.
The recording was held in perfect Mediterranean sunshine, in the grounds of a castle in Fuengirola, near Malaga (above), and the Anglicans were joined by people from other churches in the area which cater for English-speaking people.
The programme was hosted by Aled Jones, and the hymns were accompanied by Graham Kendrick and his band. They sang Mr Kendrick’s well-known “Shine, Jesus, shine”, and favourites such as “The old rugged cross” and “When the saints go marching in”.
When the recording was over, the singers were treated to a huge meal of paella before settling down to listen to a free concert by Graham Kendrick and, as a special guest, Yazz.
