Openly gay candidate for bishop

by Paul Oestreicher

ONE OF the two candidates for a bishopric in the most liberal of Germany’s Lutheran Church provinces is openly gay.

Die Kirche reports that an electoral synod, to be held in North Elbien in July, is to elect a Bishop of Schleswig (the seat is in Kiel). There has never been an openly gay Lutheran bishop in Germany.

Probst Dr Horst Gorski, 51, is at present the equivalent of archdeacon of Altona, a Hamburg suburb. When asked to comment, he said he did not believe that being gay should be an issue. His concern was that the Church should find a language that communicated with people.

Dieter Mueller, a spokesman for conservatives in the Schleswig synod, has said that the election of Dr Gorski would be a catastrophe.
