Canadians go shares in church
by a staff reporter
A COURT in Canada has ruled that the split congregations of three parishes in the diocese of Niagara must share their church buildings. The majority in the linked parishes — St George’s, Lowville; St Hilda’s, Oakville; and the Good Shepherd, St Catharine’s — has affiliated with the Province of the Southern Cone, and wishes to retain possession of its buildings. The diocese of Niagara disputed this. The Ontario Superior Court of Justice ruled on Monday that, until the ownership of the property can be determined finally, both congregations must be allowed use of the buildings. This follows a similar court ruling in Victoria (News, 11 April) that a congregation from the diocese of British Columbia, should be allowed to use its former church. |
