Unwise General Synod motion about Easter

From the Revd Oliver Coss

Sir, — Am I alone in being outraged at the private member’s motion, tabled at the February 2008 sessions of the General Synod, calling for a discussion on fixing the date of Easter? The fact that the Easter Act of 1928 has laid dormant for 80 years should, in my opinion, be evidence enough that such a change is not only unwise, but ecumenically insensitive in the extreme.

The Church of England, indeed England itself, is not a religious island — despite geographic evidence to the contrary — and in an age where religion is being fastidiously eroded from our society, may we not still rejoice that Western Christians still keep Easter on the same day? We do not need — we do not want — further dividing walls.
