Kirk to discuss poor ‘scandal’

by Ed Beavan

A REPORT that is to be discussed by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland this month highlights the “scandal of poverty” in developing countries — which it describes as “an offence before God.

The document, produced by the Church of Scotland’s World Mission Council, calls on Christians to co-operate more with churches around the world to help reduce poverty. It warns that the current fragile state of the global financial markets and rising energy costs could lead to increasing interest rates, which could plunge developing countries into further debt.

The report highlights partnerships between Scottish congregations and those in developing countries, including Sri Lanka and Nepal. It encourages twinning programmes as a way of fighting poverty. It also features the Mission Council’s grants to the Church of Bangladesh (£20,000), in the wake of Cyclone Sidr, and to the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (£40,000), after the election violence in Kenya.

The Mission Council also expresses concern over the situation in the Holy Land, and pledges to review how it can assist churches in countries where Christians are persecuted.
