Bishop Dehqani-Tafti dies, aged 87

THE Rt Revd Hassan Dehqani-Tafti, Bishop in Iran 1961-90, and Presiding Bishop in Jerusalem & the Middle East 1976-86, died on Tuesday, aged 87. He was living in Peterborough diocese. Bishop Dehqani-Tafti was exiled from Iran in 1980 after an attempt on his life and the murder of his son, Bahram. His wife Margaret was injured in the assassination attempt. His secretary, Jean Waddell, was an Iran hostage. Obituary to follow

Cancer bulletin for Peterborough bishop

THE Bishop of Peterborough, the Rt Revd Ian Cundy, who is fighting lung cancer, hopes to return to work gradually and focus on diocesan matters. In a letter to his clergy, the Bishop writes that the cancer has shrunk “quite dramatically” since he completed a course of chemotherapy, and that he is feeling much better. He concludes: “I hope to see a number of you over the next few weeks and months, and remain very grateful for the support we have received through your prayers.”

Keep rural post offices open, say Lords Spiritual

THE Bishops of Newcastle and Chelmsford have called for more to be done to keep post offices open in rural areas. During a debate in the House of Lords, the Bishop of Newcastle, the Rt Revd Martin Wharton, criticised the consultation process over the closures as “far too tight”, and endorsed the opening of post offices in rural churches. The Bishop of Chelmsford, the Rt Revd John Gladwin, praised Essex County Council, which is considering taking over about 15 threatened post offices. The Bishop urged other local authorities to follow the council’s lead.

RSCM has new Director

LINDSAY GRAY, who was head of Llandaff Cathedral School for 14 years, is the new Director of the Royal School of Church Music, writes Margaret Holness, Education Correspondent. He took up his post yesterday. Mr Gray, who is 54, is the sixth Director of the RSCM in its 80-year history, and the first to be primarily a singer rather than an organist. A former choral scholar at King’s College, Cambridge, he was director of music at several schools before becoming headmaster at Llandaff, where he doubled the school roll and founded a girls’ choir for the cathedral.
