Help for the Hospice

by Margaret Duggan

THERE are only 26 members of the Youth Zone, this triumphant youth group of St Nicholas’s and St Mary de Haura Shoreham-by-Sea, Chichester diocese, and they are aged from eight to 13. But they have managed to raise £1125.72 over the past year for Chestnut Tree House, the only hospice in Sussex for children with life-limiting illnesses.

They did it, among other events, with cake sales, by selling refreshments at a band concert in St Mary’s, and a sponsored sleepover (“though there wasn’t much sleep”, says Julie Gates, one of the youth leaders) in St Nicholas’s. They handed over the cheque to Alison Unstead from the hospice: she is pictured with them (above).

The young people are now moving on to raise funds for their next charity, Shoreham Lifeboat Station, which needs a larger boathouse for its new lifeboat. They have just been on a trip to see the problem for themselves.
