Judge rules thief must sell stamps

by Ed Beavan

THE DIOCESE of Norwich has welcomed a judge’s innovative ruling, handed down to a church treasurer and stamp collector who stole £70,000 from two Norfolk churches.

Derek Klein, one of the top five philatelists in the country, embezzled the money over a 23-year period when he was treasurer at St Peter’s, Ridlington, and St Andrew’s, Bacton. Mr Klein was sentenced to 16 months in prison last year.

During a hearing at Norwich Crown Court last week, Judge Peter Jacobs ordered him to sell his collection of first-day covers to repay the two churches.

Mr Klein, who has already paid back £15,000, has been given five months to sell the stamps on eBay. The collection includes rare stamps of George V’s silver jubilee and England’s World Cup victory in 1966. If he fails to recoup the money, he could face a further prison term.

The Revd Jan McFarlane, a spokeswoman for the diocese of Norwich, said: “We’re pleased the judge used this imaginative way of reparation. Derek Klein used his expertise to get the money in the first place, and now he can use it to get it back.”
