Teachers murdered in Somalia
by Ed Beavan
DAUD HASSAN ALI, a British man of 64, shot dead by insurgents in Somalia, may have been targeted as a convert from Islam to Christianity Mr Ali came to the UK in 1967, and worked in education for Birmingham Council. He returned to his homeland to set up the Hiran community English school in Beledweyne, 190 miles north-west of Mogadishu. Reports say that Mr Ali and another British Somali teacher, Rehana Ahmed, were shot in the head by rebels from the Islamic Shabab militia last Sunday. Two Kenyan teachers were also killed. Mr Ali’s widow, Margaret, said: “There are various disgruntled factions running around, and, because he was a convert to Christianity from Islam, then he was a target. They raided the house in the middle of the night and murdered all four people there.” It had always been his dream to set up a school in Somalia, she said. Mervyn Thomas, chief executive of Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), said: “I don’t know the details of this particular case, but the fact is there are many similar cases like this in Somalia, where Christians have been targeted and killed for their faith.” A CSW report on apostates in Muslim countries is due this month. |
