UK: a mosque moratorium?

by Ed Beavan

A MEMBER of the General Synod has called for a ban on mosques being built in the UK.

Alison Ruoff, a lay member of the Synod for the diocese of London and a member of its diocesan council, said in an interview on Premier Christian Radio on Monday that building new mosques would ultimately lead to the introduction of sharia.

Mrs Ruoff said that many mosques were financed by Islamic oil-states, and that no more mosques should be built while Christians in those countries were still being persecuted. She believes that there are now sufficient mosques for Muslims in the UK, and that new ones will lead to the surrounding areas’ becoming more Islamic.

Speaking to the Church Times on Tuesday, Mrs Ruoff said: “Christians in Islamic countries are staggered by the way they see the UK going in terms of being so accommodating when they are suffering so much. They see this nation going down the path of Islam.

“I’m passionate about the gospel of Jesus Christ, and sharing that with everyone. But tolerance hasn’t worked: Muslims are not good at integrating into society, yet they’re making their voice heard very loudly, and we’re capitulating.”

Mrs Ruoff said that she had discussed the issue with the Bishop of Rochester, Dr Michael Nazir-Ali, who said in January that some parts of the UK had become “no-go” areas for non-Muslims.

She is backing the campaign by the London mayoral candidate Alan Craig, a councillor for the Christian People’s Alliance in Newham, which is opposing an application to build a “megamosque” in the borough.

Spokesmen for the diocese of London and the Church of England stressed that Mrs Ruoff’s opinions were personal. Inayat Bunglawala, the assistant secretary-general of the Muslim Council of Britain, described her comments as “bigoted” and “xenophobic”.
