Paisley finds new crusade on the buses
by Gregg Ryan, Ireland correspondent.
THE REVD IAN PAISLEY, who stepped down as Moderator of the Free Presbyterian Church he helped to establish 40 years ago, and is about to relinquish his post as First Minister of the Northern Ireland Assembly, has found a new crusade in retirement, writes The Church has funded a £50,000 evangelistic bus, which will drive around the Irish Republic targeting possible converts at fairs, religious events, and markets. Mr Paisley does not intend to drive the bus himself, but does not discount the possibility of delivering some sermons personally. “There are people who have probably only heard about us through the papers and think we’re a bad crowd, but that’s not the reception we’ve had, and that encouraged us to go ahead and get the message out,” he says. The Free Presbyterian evangelists may find more sinners than Shinners (the colloquial term for Sinn Fein members) in the Irish republic. |
