The uses of an hon. godparent or soul-friend

From the Revd Philip Reynolds
Sir, — In practice, a godparent (Comment, 29 February; Letters 7 and 14 March) has two complementary responsibilities: (a) to encourage Christian faith in the baptism candidate as he or she grows up; and (b) to give loving, caring, nurturing pastoral support, as an adult friend, to a child, in a sensitive manner, not interfering with the care and responsibility of parents.

It is essential that a Christian baptised adult fulfils (a); but a non-Christian may be very suitable to fulfil (b). Hence, in our parish, the fairly rare practice of admitting a non-Christian as a “soul-friend” in addition to any godparent.

Last year at St Aidan’s, one family had a very good Hindu friend allowed as a soul-friend.

From Lady Oppenheimer
Sir, — How many godparents are required? There would surely be no lack of integrity in encouraging an honorary godparent to stand up with the qualified ones and promise to share their responsibility.
