The Bishop of Blackburn’s views on gambling

From Captain Philip Johanson CA
Sir, — The Revd Norman Smith (Letters, 7 March) is right to draw your readers’ attention to the duplicity of the Church of England in relation to gambling.

During the recent debate at the General Synod on casinos, the Bishop of Blackburn informed the Synod that he had supported the possibility of a supercasino in Blackpool. His reason was that it would have brought 2500 jobs to the town.

Once the Government was not planning such a project in the town, however, the Bishop spoke against gambling during the debate. I assume that if Blackpool had been awarded a supercasino, the Bishop would have spoke in favour of gambling.
