Kunonga elevates associates

by Pat Ashworth

THE deposed Bishop of Harare, Nolbert Kunonga, is now reported to live with his wife in the caretaker’s flat in St Mary’s Cathedral. The caretaker has been ejected and beaten up. The building is barricaded, and occupied by 30 Youth Militia bodyguards (News, 22 February).

Nolbert Kunonga has also given two of his supporters the title of bishop in his self-created “province”. One is the Revd Morris Brown Gwedegwe, his former Diocesan Secretary, to whom he gave the post after removing Mr Gwedegwe’s predecessor for alleged “financial irregularities”.

Mr Gwedegwe was ordained by Nolbert Kunonga without formal training. As Diocesan Secretary, he is believed to have been behind the intimidation of priests. Reports describe him as “truly unsavoury”.

The other appointed bishop is said to be the Revd Alfred Munyani, a priest for less than two years. He was reportedly one of the men accused of attacks on would-be worshippers at the cathedral (News, 18 January).

The Bishop of Harare, Dr Sebastian Bakare has urged prayer for peaceful elections on 29 March, amid reports of planned intimidation of perceived Mugabe opponents. The World Council of Churches and its member Churches in Africa plan to monitor the elections.
