Church’s burglar is a regular
by Ed Beavan

| A BURGLAR was caught red-handed after he struck three days running at the same City of London church at the same time. The thief first stole £35 from the offertory box at St Clement’s, Eastcheap, on a Monday afternoon last month, before returning for a second attempt at the same time the next day, when he was disturbed by the organist. He returned at the same time on the Wednesday with a bag of tools. The Revd Mark Kiddle, a retired priest who is administrator at the church, said that, on the third day, someone was waiting for the thief. He said: “The verger was sitting watching the CCTV, and sure enough he turned up at the same time. The verger called the police, and fortunately they responded very quickly, and five police officers turned up. “The lesson to be learnt is that people will still steal, despite the CCTV and signs warning about it.” City of London police confirmed that a 31-year-old man had been arrested and released on bail in connection with the incident. |
