Sensitivity to the hard of hearing needed, too

From Mrs Ann Kinmont
Sir, — Has the Revd Bob Shrine (Letters, 29 February) any conception of the problems encountered by those who are hard of hearing? We can have great difficulty in taking part in many of the activities in the hearing world to which many of us used to belong.

Hearing aids can be inadequate, and loop systems frequently don’t work or have not been switched on. We have not the comfort of our own deaf culture and special language. Both lipreading and sign language can be difficult to learn unless you begin when you are young.

I find it rather “offensive” to be labelled “merely” a person who has poor hearing. Bob Shrine should stop and think what he is saying.
