Decline in the villages: before the post office, the parsonage . . .

From Ms Noël Riley
Sir, — It is ironic indeed to hear of dioceses concerned about the closure of post offices (News, 29 February), when so many of them are using every opportunity to sell off traditional parsonages, those other bastions of community life.

Try substituting “parsonage” for “post office” in the text of your story, and you could come to the same conclusion: loss of a roomy old rectory or vicarage erodes parish life as surely as the closure of the post office or the pub.
