WHEN I was on a course recently about faith and older people, we were asked to reflect on a time when we felt good about ourselves. Most people came up with a long list of positive feelings, but one woman asked: “As Christians, are we meant to feel good about ourselves?”
It brought me up with a jolt: I had spent most of my life trying to make people (including myself and my children) feel good about themselves. Had I been helping them towards virtue, or just tempting them ...
