Archbishop’s 50-year thanksgiving
by Muriel Porter
![]() Front-page news: the Church Record of 28 July 1966 celebrates Archbishop Loane’s election |
| THE Rt Revd Marcus Loane KBE, Archbishop of Sydney from 1966 until his retirement in 1982, has celebrated the 50th anniversary of his consecration as a bishop. Archbishop Loane was consecrated in St Andrew’s Cathedral, Sydney, on St Matthias’s Day 1958. He served as an assistant (suffragan) bishop in the diocese until his election as Archbishop eight years later. He was Primate of the Anglican Church of Australia from 1978 to 1982. His successors as Archbishop — the Most Revd Donald Robinson (1982-93) and the Most Revd Harry Goodhew (1993-2001) — and the present Archbishop, Dr Peter Jensen, all attended a thanksgiving service held at his parish church, St James’s, Turramurra, in Sydney, last Sunday. A message of congratulation was read out from Dr Billy Graham, who first conducted a mission in Australia in 1958. Bishop Loane, who is 96, and Lady Loane recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. “Briefing gathered”. The Dean of St Andrew’s, the Very Revd Phillip Jensen, has called a “briefing” on the decision of the Sydney bishops not to attend the Lambeth Conference. “The Lambeth Decision: refining or redefining Anglicanism?” will be held at the Cathedral on 14 March. Dean Jensen will be one of four speakers. |
