| THE CHURCH was full for a “Marriage Celebration” service in the 12th-century St Mary’s, in Knebworth, St Albans diocese, says the Rector, the Revd Jim Pye. It was the first time they had held such a service.
About half the couples were regular members of the congregation; some had been married in the church; and others simply wanted to come. So, with their wedding photographs on the altar, more than 20 couples renewed their vows.
Mary Swann (second from front in bridal dress) was given a Fairtrade Easter egg on winning the competition for wearing the oldest wedding dress (or suit), which, Mr Pye said, “still looked lovely on her after 35 years”.
The event was linked to National Marriage Week, and there were celebrations after the service with Fairtrade wine donated by the Co-op, and cake given by the local bakers.
