All shall have prizes

From Mr John Radford

Sir, — Perhaps (in the best of Anglican traditions) Truro and Guildford could share the honours for being the first Church of England cathedral to be built in the south of England since the Reformation (Letters, 22 February)?

Strictly speaking, St Paul’s Cathedral should be the first, but as it was built on the site of Old St Paul’s, it probably doesn’t count in this context. Truro Cathedral was built over the site of the former St Mary’s Church — an aisle of which was skilfully incorporated by Pearson.

Guildford, however, was the first Anglican cathedral to be built in the southern province on virgin soil. Honours even?
