Foreign news in brief

More Canadians break away
SIX CHURCHES have announced that they are leaving the Anglican Church of Canada to join the breakaway group attached to the Province of the Southern Cone. The six are spread across different Canadian dioceses, and they will come under the jurisdiction of the Rt Revd Donald Harvey, a retired Canadian bishop who now supports the Southern Cone under the heading of the Anglican Network of Canada.

A statement said: “All these churches have acted because they are concerned about what is happening in the Anglican Church of Canada. They are determined to stay true to historic teaching.” The Canadian Primate, the Most Revd Fred Hiltz, has taken issue with this view. In an interview with the Anglican Journal, he said that the dispute was “very much focused on issues of sexuality. The Anglican Church of Canada is not in crisis when it comes to matters of faith such as the divinity of Christ, the incarnation, or the resurrection.”

Pre-Lambeth study begins
THE BISHOPS’ spiritual preparation for the Lambeth Conference began in earnest last week, with the start of six months of Bible study. All the bishops and their spouses attending the conference have been asked to go through St John’s Gospel, and are being encouraged to use a ten-year-old daily reading plan.

A special edition of the study guide, by the Revd Dr Richard Burridge, Dean of King’s College, London, and produced by the Bible Reading Fellowship, was launched at the General Synod last week. Copies have been sent to all those who are planning to attend the conference. Some bishops, including the Bishops of Bradford and Lincoln, have bought copies for all their diocesan clergy.

John: The People’s Bible Commentary is published by BRF at £8.99 (CT Bookshop £8.10); 978-1-84101-570-5. www.brf.org.uk.
