Philippines: nuns help man escape

by Vincent McKee

ANOTHER scandal has hit the beleaguered regime of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroy of the Philippines (News, 1 February). A computer expert, Rodolfo Lozada, has disclosed details of bribes paid to key figures in the administration by a Chinese broadband corporation, which is pursuing a $329-million investment project in the country.

Among the alleged recipients of payments is Mrs Arroyo’s husband, Manuel, who already has a long track record of questionable business dealings.

Mr Lozada, who was due to testify to a Congressional Committee, was apprehended by plain-clothes police on arrival at Manila airport. He managed to escape with the help of a group of nuns, who escorted him by night to De La Salle University in Manila.

There, at 2 a.m., he staged a press conference for more than 200 waiting journalists, who were briefed on the gist of his impending submission to the investigating authorities.

Mrs Arroyo’s ministers have now been attempting to discredit him and halt the investigation. He has been accused of tax evasion, while his wife was charged by the justice ministry with perjury.

In the mean time, Mrs Arroyo, who insists that the moves have nothing to do with her, has been forced by public outrage to put the broadband project on hold.

An opposition rally staged last weekend in Manila attracted more than 35,000 people, while similar protest rallies in the Visayan capital, Cebu, and Mindanaon capital, Davao, also attracted crowds of more than 12,000 each.
