Don’t let bailiffs be violent, says Nicolson
THE Christian anti-poverty trust Zacchaeus 2000 is campaigning to amend the Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill to stop bailiffs’ being given the power by the Ministry of Justice to use violence against people “as a last resort” when entering a home to enforce a debt. The Revd Paul Nicolson, chairman of the trust, said that the new regulations, which would be drafted under the Tribunals, Courts and Enforcement Act 2007, would mean that people were “traumatised by a punch-up”.

Rector and curate leave parish and families
ROCHESTER diocese has stated that the Rector of All Saints’, Snodland, Canon Jim Tipp, and his assistant curate, the Revd Elaine Northern, “will not be undertaking any duties in the parish and the Bishop of Rochester will consider their position”, after the couple left the parish and their respective spouses and six children. Canon Tipp had been married for 40 years, and Mrs Northern for 30 years. The diocese said: “The Church of England expects the highest standards of all those involved in its ministry.”

Old Bibles collected for India
BOOKSHOPS run by Wesley Owen Books and Music and Crown Books are collecting used Bibles from the end of next month until the end of May to send to India, where they will be distributed by Operation Mobilisation. Those who donate Bibles will be given, in exchange, a clay cup, similar to those offered India’s Dalits in the past, and broken after use. The Dalit Freedom Network is the 2008 Wesley Owen Charity of the Year.

Charities piggyback on Rambo IV
RAMBO IV, starring Sylvester Stallone, and set in the jungles of eastern Burma, where government troops are at war with rebels from the Karen ethnic group, is due to open today in Scottish cinemas. Christian Aid and Amnesty International Scotland are using the release of the film to call on the international community to increase pressure on the Burmese regime to introduce democracy, after last year’s protests.

McCulloch expects vote after July 2010
WOMEN were unlikely to be made bishops in the Church of England for another five years, the Bishop of Manchester, the Rt Revd Nigel McCulloch, told the Synod during its question time last week. The Bishop, who chairs the group preparing the draft legislation, said that it was “highly unlikely” that the vote on women bishops would be taken by July 2010.

Dr Wright in Habermas resurrection tour
THE Bishop of Durham, Dr Tom Wright, is to lead a free day-long workshop on the evidence for Easter at Westminster Chapel, in London, on 12 March. It will be his contribution to an eight-city “tour” by Professor Gary Habermas, the author of more than 30 books on the resurrection.

Most sceptics remain sceptical in St Davids
RESEARCHERS from the University of Warwick’s Religions and Education Research Unit have found that St Davids Cathedral meets the needs of religious visitors well, but has a low spiritual impact on non-religious visitors. The team, led by Canon Leslie Francis and Dr Emyr Williams, discovered that non-religious people found the cathedral awe-inspiring, inviting, and uplifting, but only 18 per cent of them felt a sense of God’s presence. They were not impressed by the cathedral shop.

‘Body Worlds 4’ ad campaign criticised
ADVERTISEMENTS for the exhibition “Body Worlds 4” at Manchester Museum, which show a dead skinless man running, have been denounced by a Manchester diocesan spokesman. “The advertising agency is treating dead people as ‘products’,”, he said. “I wonder if the man pictured gave his permission to be on a poster.” The Bishop, the Rt Revd Nigel McCulloch, has warned that the show could reduce donations of bodies to the NHS.

Correction: The Archbishop of Armagh is the Most Revd Alan Harper, not Alex Harper, as incorrectly captioned in last week’s paper.
