New scheme for debtors

by Rachel Harden

CHURCHES can become local debt-counselling centres through a new volunteer scheme launched last week by Christians Against Poverty (CAP).

The low-cost scheme, “CAP Volunteer Centres”, seeks to help more churches support debtors by offering counselling, advice, and practical help. Volunteers will be given CAP training, and operate similarly to CAP’s existing 65 UK centres, but at a reduced cost.

Matt Barlow, CAP’s UK Chief Executive Officer, said on Friday: “We understand that setting up a CAP centre in a local church brings a certain financial commitment, and we are excited that CAP Volunteer Centres will open the doors to those churches not previously able to afford a standard CAP Centre. . . The quality of the training and the subsequent work undertaken by the volunteer debt counsellors will in no way be inferior to what is offered in our established CAP Centres.”

CAP Volunteer Centres can be run in three different ways, he says, which gives flexibility to those who wish to open a centre, but have “limited hours or manpower”. CAP aims at opening at least one centre in every large town and city by 2021. For more information, phone 01274 760720 or visit www.capuk.org
