Guide gives advice on sex workers

by Toby Cohen

A “GOOD Practice Guide” for people working with prostitutes has been launched by the National Christian Alliance on Prostitution.

It has four sections: Meeting a need; Deciding what to do and how to do it; Getting the project off the ground; and Staying on track.

Mark Wakeling, director of the alliance, said: “Sometimes churches can rush in too quickly without thinking about the implications. It is important to act carefully and consider the experience of other groups. We wanted to give a general picture of good practice.”

There are an estimated 80,000 people involved in prostitution in the UK, and church groups have developed a variety of services in response to their needs. The alliance enables these groups to share the results of their experiences.

Mr Wakeling said: “In 1995, when we first started to work with women involved in prostitution, we were shocked by the lack of resources available to small charities that tackled sexual exploitation.” The alliance now has more than 700 staff and volunteers.

The guide, he said, had begun to “provoke more people to deal with the problem”.
