Farewell

SAYING farewell in the Synod to the Bishop of Truro, the Rt Revd Bill Ind, the Archbishop of Canterbury said that, when he was Bishop of Grantham, Bishop Ind had made all the people feel they had a pastor and friend. In Cornwall, he had been an eloquent advocate on behalf of those who could not afford homes, teachers, and farmers under pressure. And there had not been many bishops who had become a star in their own television series. Dr Williams hoped that his retirement would be happy. With his love of walking, it would certainly be very muddy.

The Synod also said farewell to the retiring Bishop of Sheffield, the Rt Revd Jack Nicholls. Dr Williams praised his “disarming gift” of being able to defuse situations with humour; his flair for the stage and entertainment, which he also used to open doors; and his great gifts as a communicator, in the House of Lords, and as a preacher and after-dinner speaker.

Bishop Nicholls shared Dr Williams’s attitude to technology, manifested in resistance to “the universal love of computers”. He had brought a Catholic dimension to mission as vice-chairman of Fresh Expressions, and had been “a pastoral presence in Yorkshire, loved by all”. His advocacy for those affected by the severe flooding of 2007 had continued long after the issue had gone out of the public eye.
