DAME MARY TANNER, President of the World Council of Churches, who was awarded her DBE in the New Year Honours list, was described by the Archbishop of Canterbury as the greatest gift to 20th-century ecumenism, in the Synod on Wednesday afternoon. “We have been in the habit of calling her the ‘Dame’ for some time. Now the Supreme Governor has caught up with us,” he said.
Dame Mary had made “an immense contribution to scholarship, ecumenism, and the general good heart and good spirit of our Church”, Dr Williams said.
