| THE BISHOP of Birmingham, the Rt Revd David Urquhart (pictured), is encouraging people to pray more deeply this Lent. On Shrove Tuesday he launched “Too Deep for Words — Praying With Jesus” at the Hope Hut in the Lickey Hills, south of the city.
The Hope Hut, a simple shelter, was the initiative of Lickey Church, that stands in the Lickey Hills Country Park, a large area of wooded hills given by the Cadbury family to the people of Birmingham for their relaxation and recreation. The hut will remain open for the whole of Lent, and can be booked for a retreat by groups or individuals, although people are free to drop in at any time.
It is all part of a Lent programme which included prayer and pancakes at St Martin-in-the-Bull-Ring on Shrove Tuesday evening, regular Tuesday talks about prayer by the Bishop in Birmingham Cathedral, and a diocesan youth service for 500 young people at which the Bishop will speak.
“I am simply asking people to spend two minutes of every day in prayer this Lent as we journey together into a deeper understanding of the love of God revealed in Jesus,” the Bishop says.
He will be visiting a number of parishes, and all Anglican churches in the diocese are requested to be open at least one full day to welcome people wanting to pray.
Prayer suggestions from the “Too Deep for Words” booklet are available on the diocesan website
