Remembering the homeless

FOR MORE THAN 70 years, Leeds Parish Church has worked with homeless people, and latterly with refugees. St George’s Crypt now has a staff of 30, and plenty of volunteers. It provides overnight and day care, advice and counselling, and skills training for the increasing number of asylum-seekers and refugees in Leeds.

Recently, for the first time, they held a civic service to remember all the homeless who have died. It was a Candlemas evensong that brought together the Lord Mayor, the local Member of Parliament, and community and church leaders, together with homeless men and women.

Taking part in the service was the Bishop of Ripon & Leeds, the Rt Revd John Packer, and Major Peter Forrest of the Salvation Army. The address was given by the Revd Gary Scott, Chaplain to the Homeless and Director of St George’s Crypt. Candles were lit to remember those who had died, and draped around the nave of the church were T-shirts painted by homeless people, the result of a week of arts events which included poetry and music.
