Archbishop’s Canada reply
by Pat Ashworth
THE ARCHBISHOP of Canterbury has reiterated that he cannot sanction foreign interventions in the life of the Canadian Church. Dr Williams was responding to a letter sent by the Archbishop of Canada, the Most Revd Fred Hiltz, to his fellow Primates, clarifying Canada’s position on same-sex blessings (News, 18 January), and to an earlier appeal to Dr Williams to “address the very serious issues raised by [the intervention of the Southern Cone] and to make it clear such actions are not a valid expression of Anglicanism”. Dr Williams describes Archbishop Hiltz’s letter as “helpful, clear, and eirenic”. He writes: “I would simply repeat what was said in my Advent letter, to the effect that I cannot support or sanction such actions, in line with what successive Lambeth Resolutions and Primates’ Communiqués have declared, as well as the statements of my predecessor about irregular ordinations and the clear directions of the Windsor report.” |
