Pope backs Middle East Christians

by Gerald Butt

POPE Benedict XVI has sent a message of support to Christians in the Middle East.

The Pope said it was understandable that many from the minority Christian communities across the region would want to leave, but he urged Christians around the world to support those who chose to stay.

The message was delivered at a meeting at the Vatican of Latin-rite bishops of Israel, the Palestinian Territories, Cyprus, Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Kuwait, the Arabian Peninsula, Djibouti, and Somalia.

Pope Benedict said that, in their daily encounters with Jews and Muslims, Christians could make a “contribution to establishing more fraternal relations among persons and groups”.

Earlier, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Mgr Michel Sabbah, said that prospects for stability in the Middle East hinged on achieving peace in the Holy Land.
