Bakare takes up the reins

by Pat Ashworth

BISHOP Bakare’s first pastoral letter was read in all congregations in Harare last Sunday.

Quoting from Ecclesiastes, Dr Bakare said: “[My wife and I] have come to a place where there is a need for everything: to plant, to heal, to build, to gather, to search, to embrace, to love, and, indeed, to have peace.

“In order to accomplish this, I invite

all of you who have made up your mind

to remain within the Province of

Central Africa, and indeed the world-

wide Anglican Church, to continue

with the work of God as we have in-

herited it from our forebears in faith.

“A lot has been done to tarnish the image of our Church and that of the office of a bishop. We have had enough negative publicity in our national papers which have put us to shame. We therefore have to work hard to re-establish the dignity of our Church.”

Dr Bakare, who will be Bishop of Harare until elections take place for a permanent appointment in a year’s time, announced a restructuring of the diocese to include a diocesan secretary and support staff, and the appointment of a taskforce to spearhead issues such as priests’ welfare.
