WHEN the Revd John Baines (above) arrived four years ago at St George’s, New Mills, in Derby diocese, he was puzzled to see that, although the churchyard had been closed for burials, there seemed to be a large empty space at one end of it, known as Free Ground West.
His research revealed that it contained the unmarked paupers’ graves of about 150 people, who had been buried over the course of 40 years, from 1908 to 1948. Their names were in the burial ...
