SHE is a symbol of female fortitude, or “a submissive cosmic doormat”; a credible point of human contact with the divine, or an object of “cultish adoration”. Whatever your standpoint, there is no denying that the Blessed Virgin Mary is as big as ever. Predictions of her demise at the hands of the new feminism have been proved unfounded, and now she turns up almost daily, her image appearing on pieces of toast and water stains the world over.
