Wine: Excessive acclaim

THE press appears to be going overboard about the 2009 vintage in Bordeaux. “The best ever!” they scream, with full-page articles about how the wealthy Chinese are queuing up to pay £400 or more for a bottle of the first growths.
I am always rather wary of such proclamations. On the same day as The Guardian devoted a page to the Chinese thirst for fine claret, Radio 4 reported that Spanish wineries are going bankrupt because of a collapse in consumption.
